Simulation Accurately Predicts Noise Generated by Automotive Side Mirrors

An acoustic engineer is someone whose job is never done. Acoustic engineers in the automotive industry have achieved tremendous progress in recent years in making vehicle interiors quieter and more comfortable by reducing powertrain and road/tire noise. But as these major noise sources are reduced, other noises that were previously muffled have become much more ...

Finding the Solution to a Noise Problem

A nighttime noise complaint was issued from the residential area near one of Wärtsiläs main large 4-stroke medium speed engine factories located in downtown Vaasa.  The facility produces about 500 engines per year and every engine is subjected to a test run. An investigation found that the likely source of the intolerable noise was from the exhaust from an engine 1000 hour endurance test. Although they discovered the source of the noise, they were unable to solve the noise problem completely.

Acoustic Simulation for Spacecraft Launch

Launching a rocket into the sky is not an easy thing. There are several thousands of unimaginably complex engineering processes occurring in the background, the competition is getting tougher every day, and companies frequently only have one chance to get the launch sequence right. So what is hindering efforts to launch more powerful rockets in ...

Acoustic Simulation Helps Reduce Time to Qualify for New Noise Standard from 1 Year to 3 Months

Noise is a big problem in commercial and agricultural vehicles all around the world. While it is important for drivers to hear the sound of an engine, noise that is too loud can be uncomfortable. Government regulations on commercial and agricultural vehicles are heavy and also change from one country to another. For example, while ...

How can I determine the porosity, air flow resistivity, tortuosity, and other properties for my poro elastic materials?

Question: How can I determine the porosity, air flow resistivity, tortuosity,  and other properties for my poro elastic materials? Answer: Apparently there is no material handbook that has these readily available, nor are suppliers publishing these values openly. Fortunately, you can determine some of these properties through testing. A colleague recommended two companies that provide testing ...
