This year’s Simulating Reality Contest winners showcased innovations which utilized MSC Software’s products in various industry applications and product designs. Contest participants were divided into two categories, showcasing innovations in Industry and Academia. We are excited to see solutions for emerging big trends such as 3D printing, autonomous vehicles, lightweight composite structures, and horizontal drilling. The dedication and technical creativity from our customers and the lives they change is the root of inspiration for our company.

Our first place Industry winner, Maine Marine Composites LLC, used Adams to simulate and realistically mimic the behavior of an adult Leatherback turtle colliding and becoming entangled in a mooring rope. These entanglements prove to be fatal for Leatherback turtles and the team needed a tool to understand how entanglements occur in hopes to make fishing aquaculture and mooring equipment safer for marine animals. Through the successful reproduction of the turtle and its movements, the team was able to drastically increase the bending stiffness of the mooring in hopes of preventing future entanglement.

Our University winner, Egypt-Japan University for Science and Technology (E-JUST), used Marc to verify FEM on a Hybrid Magnetic Bearing (HMB). Marc was used to test a proposed design of a Pole Biased Homopolar Radial Hybrid Magnetic Bearing. The project showcased the powerful multiphysics capabilities of Marc especially electro-magnetic analysis. Fixed voltage boundary condition, material selection, stiffness, and density were verified through the simulation process.
