Designing Spinal Disc Prosthesis Implants Using Short Fiber Reinforced Composites

Designing Spinal Disc Prosthesis Implants Using Short Fiber Reinforced Composites   Spinal injury and the gradual deterioration of spinal discs that lead to back pain or spinal disorders can be treated surgically. One of the most promising surgical options under continuous development is the use of artificial discs to replace the patient’s natural spinal disc. …

Left of Test: How Manufacturing Variability Affects Material Properties

For manufacturers, materials property data plays a significant role in strengthening product design, manufacturing process, after market performance and profitability. This is mainly because knowing property data gives manufacturers the ability to determine engineering property matrix. Uncontrollable and unscalable variation of material property can result in lack of prediction, thus governance on the material behavior …

HPC – The Genesis of SDM

The first commercial SDM platform was deployed into production on BMW’s HPC on 19 December 2000 (ref 1). Virtual Insight, the platform for BMW’s CAE Bench solution, had been deployed by a visionary team at Silicon Graphics, the HPC provider. The Munich-based SGI Professional Services team had decided to develop a technology framework to enable the development of domain solutions for HPC users. Virtual Insight was designed to enable the automation of dataset management; to assemble sets of data, transfer the data to the HPC and then collect and collate the results. The idea was to reduce the data management overhead on simulation experts whilst providing traceability of results, thus enabling analysts to submit more jobs on HPCs.

Why Traditional Data Management Methods Are No Longer Efficient for Simulation

There are several engineering software environments that cover a broad range of products, derivatives, duty cycles, and multi-stage/multi-discipline simulations. Some manufacturers have a regulatory environment or liability issues that require them to use and document all the simulation activities they have performed, or the ones they need to optimize, which can mean that every simulation …

Simulation Accurately Predicts Noise Generated by Automotive Side Mirrors

An acoustic engineer is someone whose job is never done. Acoustic engineers in the automotive industry have achieved tremendous progress in recent years in making vehicle interiors quieter and more comfortable by reducing powertrain and road/tire noise. But as these major noise sources are reduced, other noises that were previously muffled have become much more …

Should I Invest in Simulation Process Data Management (SPDM)?

Should I Invest in Simulation Process Data Management (SPDM)?   Today, simulation process and data management systems (SPDM) are being used by many manufacturing companies. SPDM significantly contributes to their efforts to maintain competitive advantage in the market. With SPDM, companies are able to increase productivity, improve their quality with fewer errors and gain a …
